How to choose a mover in Thailand — 7 checks before you sign

The single skill that most affects a mover choice is not price haggling, it's the 7-minute pre-signing verification pass that catches the vast majority of Thai moving scams.

The essentials in 30 seconds
  • DBD registration lookup takes 90 seconds at dbd.go.th.
  • Tax ID cross-check reveals shell companies with no operating history.
  • Insurance certificate should match your declared value.
  • Deposit above 30 percent upfront is a red flag.
  • Written volume verification prevents 20-40 percent revisions.

The 7-check pre-signing pass

Choosing a mover is a 7-minute verification job, not a haggling contest. These checks catch the majority of Thai moving scams.

Check 1: DBD registration lookup

Verify DBD registration at dbd.go.th. Search by company name, legitimate movers appear with active status, registration date, capital, and directors. No result means the mover is unregistered.

Check 2: Tax ID cross-check

Every legitimate Thai business has a 13-digit Tax ID. Movers should include it on the quote header. Cross-check with revenue-department records for consistency with the DBD lookup.

Check 3: Insurance certificate

Ask for the current liability insurance certificate showing policy number, insurer name, coverage amount, and expiry date. Coverage should match your declared value. Standard 100,000 THB is minimum for 1-bedroom moves.

Check 4: Deposit terms

Deposits above 30 percent upfront are red flags. Legitimate movers request 10-20 percent booking deposits, balance due after move-in inspection. Cash-only movers with 50+ percent upfront request usually run away with the deposit.

Good to know

The most common mover scam in Thailand is the ghost quote, a low bid that revises upward 40-60 percent at move-day. Pre-signing volume verification and written estimates prevent this.

How to compare bids fairly

Compare volume-verified quotes only. Each bidder should physically or virtually inspect your inventory. Compare labour hours, truck size, insurance, and included services on a like-for-like basis.

Warning signs during quote review

No physical or virtual inventory check. No DBD or Tax ID on the quote. Deposit demanded above 30 percent. Insurance certificate refused. Quote lower than 40 percent below the market range. All are red flags.

Reference checks and reviews

Ask each bidder for 3 recent client references. Legitimate movers happily share names. Cross-check Google Reviews, Pantip forum posts, and Facebook page comments for consistency.
